Create a webhook in the space

  1. In Google Chat, open the space that should receive alerts.
  2. Click the space name at the top → Apps & integrations → Webhooks → Add webhooks.
  3. Name it "SutramX", save, and copy the URL. It starts with https://chat.googleapis.com/v1/spaces/.

Then click Connect Google Chat on the Google Chat card in SutramX, paste the URL into "Link from Google Chat" and click Connect. SutramX posts a test message straight away.

Google Workspace only

Webhooks are available in Google Workspace accounts. Personal Gmail accounts cannot add them, and some Workspace admins turn them off.

What the alert looks like

Google Chat receives plain text: a [DOWN] or [UP] tag with the monitor name, the URL, the region that confirmed the failure, the failure detail or the total downtime, and a link to the incident in SutramX.

[DOWN] Checkout API is DOWN
URL: https://api.example.com/health
Region: FRA1 (Frankfurt, Germany)
Detail: <failure reason>
Details: <link to the incident in SutramX>

[UP] Checkout API has RECOVERED
URL: https://api.example.com/health
Downtime: 4m 12s
Details: <link to the incident in SutramX>

The space also receives notices, each starting with a tag: [SSL] and [DOMAIN] expiry reminders for monitors with expiry notifications on, [MAINTENANCE] when a window starts and ends, [SITE HEALTH] when a scheduled crawl finds new problems, and [THIRD-PARTY] for providers you follow. Monitor names, URLs and failure reasons are escaped, so they cannot add links or formatting, and long messages are shortened to fit.

Troubleshooting

  • There is no Webhooks option under Apps & integrations: you are signed in with a personal account, or your Workspace admin has turned off incoming webhooks for your organisation. Ask the admin to allow them.
  • "This doesn't look like a Google Chat webhook URL": the link was cut short. Copy the full URL again; it includes a key and a token after the space ID.
  • The connection shows Failing: the last 3 deliveries failed and the workspace owner was emailed. The webhook may have been deleted from the space, or the space removed. Add a new webhook, replace the link with Edit on the connection, then use Send test.
  • Google Chat is rate limiting or briefly unavailable: SutramX retries automatically for a few minutes and honours the requested wait time.

Routing and escalation

Each webhook posts into one space. To split alerts by team, add a webhook in each space and connect each one; you can have up to 10 Google Chat connections. Each has its own routing (all monitors, selected groups or selected monitors), and notices follow that routing. With escalation policies (on Growth and Pro), a Google Chat step posts to every Google Chat connection, ignoring routing, with the detail "Escalation step 2: still down".

A practical split: one space for production outages that people watch closely, and another for expiry reminders, maintenance and third-party notices, routed to the monitors you care about least urgently.

Common questions

Can I use Google Chat with a personal Gmail account?

No. Incoming webhooks are a Google Workspace feature. Use email alerts, Telegram or Discord instead, which are also on every plan.

Can I acknowledge from Google Chat?

Not from the message. Open the incident from the link in the alert and acknowledge it there, which stops any escalation.

Who can see the webhook URL in SutramX?

SutramX stores the link encrypted and shows only its start and last characters. Only the workspace owner can edit or disconnect it, or click Show to reveal it while editing.

Connect it in SutramX

  1. Sign in to the SutramX dashboard and open Integrations & API in the sidebar, then the Integrations tab.
  2. On the Google Chat card, click Connect. Where you see "Connect with …", you just sign in and approve. Otherwise the card shows two or three short steps and one box to paste into.
  3. Already have a webhook link? Paste it into the box at the top of the page and SutramX works out which service it belongs to.
  4. SutramX sends a test straight away so you can confirm delivery before any real incident.
  5. Optional: use Routing to send only some monitors or groups to this channel.

You can connect more than one Google Chat destination. Each connection has its own routing, so different channels can receive different monitors.
