Private chat
- On the Telegram card in Integrations, click "Connect with Telegram".
- Telegram opens a chat with the SutramX bot. Press Start.
- The chat is linked automatically and a test message arrives.
Group
- On the Telegram card, click "Add to a group".
- Pick the group in Telegram and add the bot.
- The bot links the group and posts a test message there.
Channel
- Add the SutramX bot to the channel as an administrator. It needs permission to post messages.
- In SutramX, open the Telegram card and choose "Add to a channel". It shows a /start message with a one-time code.
- Post that message in the channel. The bot links the channel automatically.
Every link and channel code works once and expires after 30 minutes. If it expires before you finish, click Get a new link.
You can connect several Telegram chats, for example a private chat for yourself and a group for the team, each with its own routing.
Choose which monitors alert this chat
The Telegram card is under Integrations & API → Integrations in the dashboard. After the chat is linked and the test message arrives, choose the routing (all monitors, selected monitor groups, or selected monitors) and save.
Notices follow the same routing, so a chat routed to selected monitors only gets reminders about those monitors. You can connect up to 10 Telegram chats.
What the alert looks like
Telegram gets a formatted message rather than plain text. A down alert is marked DOWN and a recovery RECOVERED, followed by the monitor name, the URL, the region that confirmed the failure, the time the outage started (in UTC), the failure reason or the total downtime, and a View incident link.
The chat also receives SSL certificate and domain expiry reminders (for monitors with expiry notifications on), maintenance start and end notices, website health changes and third-party status updates. Monitor names and failure reasons are escaped, so they cannot add formatting or links.
Re-adding a chat by ID
The SutramX bot only sends to chats that were linked to your workspace through one of the steps above. If you disconnected a chat and want it back, use Re-add a linked chat by ID on the Telegram card and enter its numeric chat ID, for example -1001234567890. A chat ID that was never linked is refused, so nobody can point the bot at a chat they do not control.
If a Telegram group is upgraded to a supergroup, SutramX updates the stored chat ID automatically. To move alerts to a different chat, link the new one and disconnect the old one.
Troubleshooting
- Nothing happened after pressing Start: the link may have expired (links last 30 minutes) or already been used. Click Get a new link and try again.
- The channel did not link: the bot must be a channel administrator that can post messages before you post the /start code. Add it with that permission, then post the code again (or get a new one if it expired).
- The connection shows Failing: the last 3 deliveries failed and the workspace owner was emailed. The most common cause is that the bot was removed from the group or channel, or the chat was deleted. Add the bot back or link the chat again, then use Send test.
- Alerts arrive late or not at all on your phone: check that the chat is not muted in Telegram. SutramX delivers the message; how your phone notifies you is up to Telegram's notification settings.
Escalation and on-call tips
Telegram is a good personal channel for a solo developer or a small team, because messages reach your phone in seconds at no cost. If you use escalation policies (on Growth and Pro), a Telegram step posts to every Telegram connection, ignoring routing, with a detail line reading "Escalation step 2: still down". Telegram messages have no Acknowledge button: acknowledge from the incident page to stop the escalation.
Common questions
Do I need to create my own bot with BotFather?
No. Alerts come from the SutramX bot. You never create a bot or paste a token.
Who can connect or remove a chat?
Only the workspace owner can connect, re-route or disconnect Telegram chats. Any member can send a test.
Is Telegram on the Free plan?
Yes. Telegram alerts are included on every plan, Free included, and they do not use the SMS or WhatsApp alert credits.
All plans, Free included. Compare plans on the pricing page, or see all integrations.
