Email & push alerts

Send SutramX downtime and recovery alerts by email and browser or mobile push: recipients, address verification, test alerts and troubleshooting.

Email and browser push are built in: there is nothing to connect. Email goes to the recipients you choose for each monitor; push goes to the browsers where you turned it on. Both are included on every plan.

Email alerts#

Who receives email#

A monitor's email alerts go to everyone in these three lists, with duplicates removed:

ListWhere you set itReceives alerts for
Monitor recipientsAlerts → Recipients, or Alert recipients… in a monitor's menuThat monitor
Group recipientsAlerts → Recipients → Edit group emailsEvery monitor in the group
Verified alert contactsManaged by SutramX (the workspace owner's account email)Every monitor

If none of a monitor's addresses can receive alerts, SutramX emails the account that owns the monitor so an outage is never silent.

Add recipients to a monitor#

  1. Go to Alerts → Recipients in the sidebar (or open a monitor and choose Alert recipients… from its menu).
  2. Find the monitor and click Edit.
  3. Under Team emails, tick the teammates who should get this monitor's alerts.
  4. Under Other addresses, type an email address (for example oncall@example.com) and click Add email.
  5. Click Save alert recipients.

To alert everyone for a whole group, click Edit group emails on the group row instead.

Confirmation (double opt-in)#

New addresses must confirm before they receive anything. When you save an address that isn't a teammate's verified account email, SutramX sends it a Confirm alert emails message naming your workspace and who added it. The recipient chooses Yes, send me alerts or declines.

State shownMeaningWhat you can do
ConfirmedReceives alertsNothing needed
Pending verificationWaiting for the recipient; gets no alertsResend (after 10 minutes)
DeclinedThe recipient refused alerts from this workspaceOnly the recipient can change this
UnsubscribedThe recipient used the unsubscribe link in an alert emailOnly the recipient can resubscribe

Confirmation links expire after 72 hours. A workspace can send up to 50 confirmation emails per 24 hours, and a single address can receive up to 5 per 24 hours across all workspaces.

The Recipients page also lists all external addresses and their status. Removing one there clears its confirmation; if it is still listed on a monitor or group, it gets no alerts until it confirms again.

What an alert email contains#

Down alertRecovery alert
SubjectMonitor down: <monitor name>Monitor recovered: <monitor name>
DetailsMonitor, URL, status, detected at, region, status code, and Why (the one-line verdict, when available)Monitor, URL, status, recovered at, downtime
ExtraError details box with the failure reasonNone
ButtonView incidentView monitor (opens the incident)

If someone resolves the incident by hand, the recovery email's subject is Incident resolved manually: <monitor name> and it shows how long the incident was open instead of the downtime, because the monitor hasn't been confirmed back up. The Why line is explained in Why this alert & flakiness score.

Every alert email ends with a link to unsubscribe from the workspace's alert emails and carries a one-click unsubscribe header that mail apps can show as an Unsubscribe button.

Other emails you may receive:

  • Escalation: Escalation step <N>: <monitor name> incident is still open with how long the incident has been open, the current on-call person (on Current on-call steps) and an Acknowledge incident button.
  • SSL / domain expiry: subject such as SSL certificate expiry in 7 days: <monitor name>. Only sent when the SSL Certificate Expiry preference is on (it is off by default).
  • Maintenance: start and end notices, when Maintenance Alerts is on.
  • Test: Test alert: <monitor name>.

Send a test email#

Open the monitor, open its menu and choose Send test notification. SutramX emails the monitor's first alert recipient. Tests can only go to the monitor's alert recipients or workspace members.

Turn email types on or off#

In the Notification Preferences section of Alerts → On-call & escalation:

  • Monitor Down Alerts turns down alerts off on every channel, not just email.
  • Monitor Recovery Alerts turns off recovery emails only. Chat and paging channels still receive the recovery.
  • SSL Certificate Expiry and Maintenance Alerts control those emails only.

Browser push alerts#

Browser push shows a desktop or phone notification when a monitor goes down or recovers, even when SutramX isn't open.

Turn on browser push#

  1. Go to Alerts → Channels & API and find the Browser push alerts card.
  2. Click Turn on in this browser and allow notifications when your browser asks.
  3. Click Send test. A notification titled "SutramX test alert" should appear within a few seconds.

Repeat in every browser where you want alerts. Push is personal: it goes only to the browsers you turned it on in, for every monitor in the workspace. You can turn it on in up to 20 browsers per workspace.

What a push notification shows#

EventTitleBody
DownDown: <monitor name>The failure reason and "Seen from <region>"
RecoveredRecovered: <monitor name>"Back up after N minutes."
Resolved by handResolved manually: <monitor name>"Marked resolved in SutramX. The monitor has not been confirmed back up."

Clicking the notification opens the incident. A down notification stays on screen until you dismiss it, and each incident has a single notification that is replaced as it changes, so a recovery doesn't stack on top of the down alert.

If a browser keeps rejecting deliveries (for example because you cleared its permissions), SutramX pauses it after repeated failures. It shows as paused in the list; turn push on again in that browser to resume.

Mobile app#

The SutramX app for Android is on Google Play. It sends its own push alerts, with an Acknowledge action on the notification and critical alerts that can sound on silent. The iPhone app isn't released yet; on an iPhone, turn on browser push as described above. See Mobile app.

Common questions#

Why didn't my colleague get the email? They are probably Pending verification, or they're a team member who was never added to the monitor, its group or an escalation policy. Check the Alerts → Recipients page.

Can I send alerts to a distribution list? Yes. Add the list's address under Other addresses. Someone with access to that inbox must click the confirmation link.

Do push alerts respect routing? No. Browser push goes to every monitor's alerts for the members who turned it on. To limit what reaches a channel, use a chat channel with routing instead.

Does push work during maintenance? Push follows the same rules as every other channel: alerts held back by a maintenance window or quiet hours are held for push too.
