Get Started

Quickstart

Go from sign-up to a working monitor, alerts in Slack or email, a public status page and an invited teammate in about ten minutes.

This guide takes you from a new account to a working setup: one monitor, an alert channel, a public status page and a teammate. Every step uses the labels you see in the dashboard, and each takes a minute or two.

You don't need a card for any of it. The Free plan has no time limit, and every step below works on it.

Getting started in six steps
Six steps from sign-up to a team that gets alerted. Select a step to jump to it.

1. Create your account#

  1. Go to https://app.sutramx.com/signup.
  2. Enter your Full name, Email and Password.
  3. Tick the box to accept the Terms of Service and Privacy Policy.
  4. Click Create account.

You can also click Continue with Google or Continue with GitHub to sign up with one of those accounts.

As you type, a strength meter checks your password against the password policy. If the password is rejected, the message under the field explains why.

2. Verify your email#

You must verify your email before you can create monitors, invite teammates or create API keys. After you sign up, SutramX opens the Verify your email page and sends you an email containing a 6-digit code and a link.

  1. Enter the code in Verification code. You can also click the link in the email instead.
  2. Click Verify email.
  3. Click Create your first monitor. If your workspace already has monitors, the button says Go to dashboard instead.

The code expires 15 minutes after it was sent. If it expires or never arrives, click Send a new code. There is a short cooldown between resends.

Until you verify, every dashboard page shows a yellow banner, Verify your email to start monitoring. It has an Enter code link and a Resend button.

3. Create your first monitor#

  1. In the sidebar, click Monitors. If you have no monitors yet, you'll see No monitors yet.
  2. Click Create your first monitor. Later, use the New monitor button at the top of the page.
  3. In Add new monitor, leave What do you want to check? set to Website (is the page up?) to check a web page.
  4. Enter the full URL, for example https://example.com.
  5. Optionally, enter a Name you'll recognise in alerts, for example Marketing site. If you leave it blank, the host name is used.
  6. Leave Check interval at the default, Every 5 minutes, or pick a faster one. The hint under the field shows the fastest interval your plan allows.
  7. Click Test to run one check right now. You'll see a result such as Test passed · HTTP 200 · 182 ms without saving anything.
  8. Click Create monitor.

The monitor shows Pending until its first check is recorded, then Up. Click the monitor to open its detail page with response times, check history and SSL details.

Optional settings in the form#

Other monitor types work the same way. Pick API endpoint, Server ping (ICMP), Port (database, mail…), UDP port (DNS, game servers…), Scheduled job (cron) heartbeat, DNS records, Multi-step API check or MCP server in What do you want to check?. A type marked (upgrade to use) isn't included in your plan. If you choose API endpoint, a Guided preset list can fill in sensible checks for you. See Monitors overview for every type.

4. Choose where alerts go#

Out of the box, the workspace owner's verified email gets an alert email for every monitor when it goes down and again when it recovers. Add a chat channel so the rest of your team sees alerts too.

Connect Slack (or another chat app)#

  1. In the sidebar, open Alerts → Channels & API.
  2. On the Integrations tab, find the Slack card and click Connect Slack.
  3. In Slack, open api.slack.com/apps and choose Create New App → From scratch.
  4. Enable Incoming Webhooks, click Add New Webhook to Workspace, pick the channel and copy the webhook URL.
  5. Back in SutramX, paste the URL into Link from Slack and click Connect.

SutramX sends a test message right after connecting, so check your Slack channel. If your dashboard also shows a Connect with Slack button, you can sign in to Slack and pick a channel instead of pasting a link.

Discord, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat and Mattermost are set up the same way from their own cards, and Telegram has its own card. If you already have a webhook link, paste it into Already have a webhook link? at the top of the tab. SutramX recognises Slack, Discord, Microsoft Teams, Google Chat, Mattermost and Zapier links and connects the right one.

A new chat connection receives alerts for All monitors. To narrow that down, open the connection's menu and choose Routing. See Slack, Teams & chat apps.

Add more email recipients#

  1. In the sidebar, open Alerts → Recipients.
  2. Find your monitor and click Edit.
  3. Under Team emails, tick teammates. Under Add email, type another address and click Add.
  4. Click Save alert recipients.

Addresses outside your team get a confirmation email first, and they only receive alerts after they click Yes, send me alerts. See Email & push.

Test it#

You don't have to wait for a real outage to check your setup:

  • Chat channels: on Channels & API, open the connection's menu and choose Send test.
  • Email: on the monitor's detail page, open the ⋮ menu and choose Send test notification. This sends a test alert email to one of the monitor's alert recipients.

5. Publish a status page#

  1. In the sidebar, click Status pages, then Create a status page. If you already have pages, click New status page.
  2. Enter a Page title, for example Acme status, and click Create.
  3. In the editor that opens, go to Components. Choose your monitor in the dropdown, click Add, then click Save changes in the bar at the bottom of the page.
  4. Click View page at the top to see the public page.

New status pages are published straight away. The address has the form https://app.sutramx.com/status/<slug>, and the slug is generated from the title. You can change it in General → URL. To hide the page while you work on it, click Unpublish.

You can also add a monitor from the monitor list: open the monitor's ⋮ menu and choose Status pages….

See Status pages overview for branding, custom domains and subscribers.

6. Invite your team#

Team seats are unlimited on every plan. Only the workspace owner can invite people.

  1. In the sidebar, open Account → Team members.
  2. Click Invite member.
  3. Enter their Email address, choose a Role (Member, or Viewer for read-only access) and click Send invite.

The invitee gets an email with an Accept invitation button. The link is valid for 7 days. They must sign in or sign up with the invited address and verify it. They join with the role you chose.

See Team members & roles.

What's next#

  • Add monitors for your other critical paths: login, checkout, your public API and your scheduled jobs.
  • Tick Expiry email in the Domain & SSL card of each website or API monitor to be reminded before the certificate or domain expires. See SSL & domain expiry.
  • On paid plans, check from more than one region so an incident only opens when they agree. See Regions & confirmation.
  • Schedule a maintenance window before planned work so nobody is paged.
  • Set up escalation and on-call if you have a rota.

Common questions#

I clicked Create monitor and got "Verify your email before creating a monitor"#

You haven't verified your email yet. Use the Enter code link in the yellow banner, then try again.

The plan limit message appears when I create a monitor#

Your plan's monitor limit is reached. Delete a monitor you don't need or upgrade. See Plans & limits.

My monitor stays on Pending#

The first check usually runs within moments of creation. If it stays on Pending, open the monitor and click Run check now, then look at Check history for errors. See Troubleshooting.
